This morning I slipped discs 3 and 4 from the box set into paper sleeves so I could listen to them in the car while I went to an appointment. Picked up a book, some papers, and the disc from my desk and headed out. Got in the car...no disc 3. "Must have left in on the desk," I'm thinking.
Arrive home two hours later. There's disc 3 in my driveway, run over by my Volvo wagon, and COMPLETELY RUINED. Arrgggggggggghhhhhhh!!! (Even more irrational...even though I can probably get a burned CD-R copy from a friend, it won't be the same as having an intact set...)
I'll have to calm down a bit before I wax poetic / coherent about those Alex solo demos at the end of Disc Two. Magnificent for sure...

ah oh no! i understand the feeling. should be getting mine today (stupid USPS won't leave it at my door or redeliver and they close so early and are so far from my work...sigh). Maybe you should just wait for the set to show up on ebay or used on amazon? if you wait a few weeks you can probably get one fairly cheap. since i trust you do own it (and i will too) i can be that friend who rips it into flac quality so you can make an exact cd quality copy? just tryin to help out a fellow big star fanatic! (since you're the current resident big star honcho you should just press rhino to send you one gratis, altho i know you didn't want to pull your strings)
Thanks Martbot...I actually just had a local friend tell me he's sending me the disc. I actually buy so few box sets that this is a good reminder that it's a good idea to burn back-up copies of a box set and use the back-up copy for actually listening. I'm doing that with the Sir Douglas Quintet box I recently scored on eBay right now...

Ouch. Sorry to hear this, but your post reminded me of how back in the early '70s, me and my buddies used to make listening copies of our records on cassette. We'd play the cassettes so that we didn't have to risk damaging the vinyl. Sorta similar to what you're doing now by making disc back-ups.
I just got my copy of the box set today, BTW, and am listening to it now. To say that I'm impressed is the understatement of the year.
